SQUARE

The square is a system of locks ? used in RSM since at least the 17th century ? that enables the main channel waters to be stopped, leading to the raising of the water level to the height of the rolls or holes that permit the irrigation of elevated agricultural areas. Due to the use of machinery to move the floodgate of the square since the late 19th century, now it is used, in some cases, an electric power engine to raise or lower the square. Centuries back all of the operations related to the stop of the square were lined with wooden planks and finished with metal plates.
