THE WINDS

THE NAMES

The characteristic winds of the landscape of the agricultural Horta of Valencia are “Mestral” —NW direction —, “tramuntana” — direction N —, “gregal” — direction NE —, “llevant” — direction E—, “migjorn” —direction S —, “garbí” — direction SW —, “xaloc” — directino SE— and “ponent” — direction W.

The “Mestral” is a strong and violent wind blowing northwestern. It very often causes frost to oranges.
The “tramuntana” north wind: it's a cold wind coming from the north, is loud when it blows, and we see that the sky has a very pure blue color.
“El gregal” (in the afternoon): northeast wind accompanied by rain or snow. It normally blows from February to May and from October to December.
“Llevant” or “Levante”: A mild wind along the Valencia coast and regularly with rain.
The “migjorn”: South blowing wind that in winter and spring only brings rain.
“El garbí” (the southwesterly wind): Blows strong and irregularly from the southwest at the end of the winter or summer. It is also known as “llebeig” (midnight) for bringing thunderstorms and big waves.
“El ponent” (the speaker): is a wind from the west, hot and dry. Very often it is harmful to agriculture, especially in summer.
The "xaloc": also known as the “marinade” is a southeastern wind flow, hot and humid during the summer, while in winter can bring rain or snow.
