FLOODS

Autumn storms, from September to November, particularly when heavy rain falls over the middle basin of the Túria River, are transformed into sudden floods with devastating effects on the coastal plain.

With the flooding of the River Túria allies, on many occasions, with the canyon of Carraixet and other small watershed gullies that run down from the piedmont to the coastal plain. These meteorological circumstances are linked to the characteristics of the watercourses, of low length and steep slopes, with flows of high speed and limited duration, causing floods.
Of the city of Valencia and its agricultural gardens, or horta, we have news of flooding from since the year 1321. The description of these always describes destruction. Bridges, gardens, houses, walls, thousands of human lives. For example, the flood of August 17, 1358 claimed about a thousand homes in the city. Among the closest in time are the floods of the 1st of November, 1897, the 28th of September, 1897, and the 13-14th of October, 1957. In the basin of Carraixet people recall, as particularly destructive, the September, 1677, November, 1897, 15th of October, 1908, and most recently, on the 28th of September, 1949.
