RECURRENT PHENOMENA

DROUGHTS

During much of the year the areas irrigated by the Irrigation Canal of Montcada are in a permanent drought. From late winter to late summer, i.e. three-quarters of the year, the biological activity in natural conditions, is either null, or is conditioned by deficits in water availability.

While the temperatures throughout the year would allow for the cultivation of a variety of plants, the almost lack of humididity in natural conditions would prohibit the cultivation of a large part of them.
The Túria River, in the natural system, behaves like any Mediterranean River, and is marked by a strong drought in summer months. Its ability to provide water for irrigation to crops is based on an inverse relationship between the crop water requirements and the water available. A consequence of this drought was, in the past, the inevitable adoption of extraordinary measures to ensure the viability of crops.
