MARSHES

THE MARSH OF MONTCADA

Between Burjassot and Alfara the Patriarca, the Royal Irrigation Canal of Montcada makes an arc attached to the edge of a topographic relief from the Miocene Epoch, defining a depressed area covered by Quaternary materials. This deep area is the result of a closure generated to the south by alluvial sediments of the Túria and in the north sedimentary deposits of the Carraixet. This cul-de-sac is known as the marsh of Montcada.

In geomorphologic terms, it is an inter-cones depression, which is powered by the hydrologic contributions of the Friars and Massarrojos gullies.
This is therefore an area poorly drained, an ancient marsh completely transformed by previous farmers of the Royal Irrigation Canal of Montcada, which finds an exit for the water through the Canyon of Palmar, between Carpesa and Borbotó. In fact, the last remnants of marsh vegetation and the only flows, preserved until recently, were the springs of Borbotó in the irrigation canal of Palmaret.
