MARSHES

AN ANCIENT SANDBAR RAVAGED

The coastal marsh the Northern agricultural gardens was separated from the sea by a  sandbar  or marine band supported by the alluvial cone of Palància and the Tùria estuary. This sedimentary barrier was made up of mostly of pebbles, mainly in the northernmost sector, from the Palancia, but the proportion of sand was artificially increased with the aim of promoting tourism.

Thus, throughout the twentieth century, in particular after the sixties, the sandbar has suffered numerous acts of anthropogenic aggression. The construction of housing estates and the coastal route of the AP-7 have put an end to much of the original environment.
One of the most severe acts of aggression is the erosion generated by the shadow effect of the ports of Sagunt and the Pobla (Town) of Farnals, which significantly aggravated the situation of coastal sedimentary deficit caused by the retention of material in the reservoirs located next to rivers. The sandbar is affected accordingly by a steep decline, which has been tested extensively in order to build breakwaters that move the problem from one point to another of the coastline.
