SOIL FORMATION PROCESSES

The processes of soil formation are due to the physical and chemical alteration of the original material — bedrock — which is produces, mainly, due to geological and climate actions. The legacy of living organisms and human activity, such as agriculture, are also key to this process.

Soils, from original materials that they are formed from, evolve and restructure into superimposed levels known as horizons. The horizons of a soil define its profile, each one of which has definite physical properties, and determined chemical and biological compositions. In the processes of soil formation we can distinguish native soils, those formed from alteration in situ by rock below them, and the soils formed in other ways, with materials from far away. In the territory of the Royal Irrigation Canal of Montcada most soils have been subjected to continuous alterations by human societies, cultivation, the incorporation of organic matter, sandblasting, etc. which are the typical processes that shape the soils of this region. The influence of such prominent canyons such as the Carraixet, have also been a key element in the formation of these soils.
